HER: Opening Credits

“Taking Flight” is a title sequence for the film HER directed by Spike Jonze. Wanting to do a character study of Theodore (Joaquin Phoenix), we set out to explore the mindset of Theodore before the start of the film. After Theodore and Catherine split up, he falls into a dull routine of waking up, going to work, and coming home, without any sense of purpose or new experiences. Although he's good at his job of writing heartfelt letters that connect people, he struggles to talk and find happiness with those he knows personally.

Using Los Angeles and its wide cityscape, the goal was to have a drawn letter blow throughout the real world, showing the story of Theodore and the effects of his fallout with Catherine. While showing time passing over the buildings and locations, the letter would land in an empty, dark alleyway, with other letters.
